Supporting New writing is a key part of Putney Theatre Company's creative mission
Below you will find competition details, and news about the winners and productions once the competition has closed.
PTC is very excited to introduce the theme for this season's New Writing: “It’s what’s inside that counts”.
It's a theme with many connotations – what's inside a person, a room, a box or even a cake! What are the secret ingredients we hold onto which will make a difference? Do we need to be reminded by others about what counts? Are we sure about knowing what's inside, or do we want to let fate decide what's important? Does this theme bring out thoughts of something within or is it something palpable on the outside? Is it aesthetically pleasing, or does it carry dark properties?
This season's PTC New Writing seeks new writing to inspire, to be thought-provoking and to expand on the idea that “it’s what’s inside that counts”. We wish to ignite discussions outside the constraints of the theatre. Your piece could be about political, social, economic or personal consequences.
We are not looking for any lockdown/isolation pieces related to the current climate, unless absolutely necessary for the progression of the piece. We are looking for pieces that bring us all together. There is no restriction on format for your piece. Use the state of society in your set time period to highlight the good and bad of a situation in those times. There has to be an objective to the writing, which can have a turn of events that gives way to your interpretation of “It’s what’s inside that counts”.
This year’s New Writing will be performed via Zoom, with the audience invited to the intimacy of the piece and the characters. Please write for a maximum of 4/5 actors. Pieces can be from 3 to 15 minutes.
The deadline for delivering your submission is 11 December 2020. We'll be taking successful submissions through two rounds of development to help make your script even better, with the final decision of pieces being made by December 2020 and performances in March 2021.
