“…the entire class burst into laughter. I didn’t see that I’d said anything funny. My name is fairly straightforward and I’ve only got one head. I turned to the blackboard and saw that some joker had drawn an enormous pair of genitals on the board.” Teechers, John Godber
Remember your school days? Reports, the dreaded detentions, freezing showers, fancying the teachers, and trying to avoid the bullies? This October be catapulted back to the classroom by Putney Theatre Company, as three school leavers take a riotously fast paced look at life in a modern comprehensive in the hilarious comedy from BAFTA winner John Godber.
Set in Whitewall Comprehensive, Teechers, it is the tale of three underachieving delinquents, Hobby, Gail and Salty and their last year at school, featuring evil Mr Basford, eccentric head teacher Mrs Parry, as well as chirpy Miss Prime, and school lunatic Oggy Moxon.
Hobby, Gail and Salty are inspired by their new drama teacher, to create a school play about their final year to perform to their peers and teachers on their last day. The three pupils get really stuck into the project and for the first time realise that school can give them something that they are good at and actually enjoy.
Their play follows the arrival of a newly qualified drama teacher, Mr Nixon his relationship with the pupils and his gradual disillusionment as he finds his way barred by cynical colleagues, obstructive support workers and thuggish pupils leading him to consider leaving the teaching profession all together.
