The House Of Bernarda Alba
By Frederico Garcia Lorca

Saturday 31 October
Lorca’s tense tale of a tyrannical and sexually repressed matriarch and her daughters is on one level an allegory of a Spain under Catholicism and Franco’s fascist forces – a culture that was to see Lorca murdered for his politics and his sexuality just after he wrote this play
‘’not a breath of air will get in this house from the street." Bernarda tries to create a barrier between her family and the men of her town. While doing that her masculine persona becomes more and more apparent. Bernarda, rules over her house and five daughters, cruelly crushing their hopes and needs. Her obsession with ‘What the neighbours will say’ contributes to the black pain of the Andalusian family and the tragic consequences.
